Pope Francis is outraged by the burning of the Koran in Sweden. “I am outraged and disgusted by such actions. Any book that is considered sacred by its people must be respected out of respect for those who believe in it. The right to free speech must never be used as an excuse to offend,” the pope said in an interview with the UAE’s Al-Ittihad newspaper, which appeared on Monday.

The Pope also raised the issue of violence.”In my opinion, the only way to protect young people from negative messages, false news and material temptations, hatred and prejudice is not to leave them alone in this struggle, but to leave them the necessary tools, namely freedom, discernment and responsibility,” said the Pope. Excerpts from the interview with “Al-Ittihad” were published in Italian media on Sunday evening.

At a demonstration in Stockholm on Wednesday, a Koran was set on fire for the first time in months. The police had previously approved the protest following other actions of this type were banned in February. However, Swedish courts had ruled that the police did not have the right to refuse permission to burn the Koran.
