Pope Francis urged this Sunday to pray for the end of the current wars in various parts of the world, among them in “martyred Palestine“, the first time he has used this adjective to refer to the Palestinian territories.

“We continue to pray for the populations that suffer because of the war. The martyred Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, the martyred Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar,” the pontiff said in his Sunday Angelus homily before the faithful in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. , within the framework of the canonization ceremony of 14 saints, including seven Spanish Franciscan friars murdered in Syria in 1860.

“We invoke for all (countries at war) the gift of peace,” said Francis, who in his speeches usually reiterates his appeals for the end of armed conflicts in the world, and usually refers to both Palestine, Israel and Ukraine.

However, he used the term “martyred” only to refer to Ukraine, and this Sunday he also incorporated it to Palestine.

This week the pontiff received a delegation led by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Palestinian Foreign Minister Naser al Kidwa, nephew of the historic leader Yasser Arafat. They promote a peace plan to end the war in Gaza and find a resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that they presented in their meeting before the Pope.
