Believers of Catholicism who are transgender can be baptized into the Catholic Church if the act does not cause any “public scandal” or “confusion.” This was announced by the Vatican this Wednesday, November 8, through a document, in response to a question from a Brazilian bishop.
This point was clarified in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, whose mission is to promote and defend the Catholic faith, where no objections were raised to baptizing the children of same-sex couples, whether adopted or born through surrogacy.
The Vatican made these comments in a document in which it answered questions from José Negri, bishop of Santo Amaro in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The writing, approved by the Pope Franciscois dated October 31, but was made public this Wednesday.
Pope Francis: “I am not in good health”
The pontiff insisted on several occasions that the Church must be open to everyone, including LGBTQ believers.
However, he made it clear that he considered homosexuality “a sin, as is any sexual act outside of marriage.” Catholic teaching still defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman to have children.
Pope Francis asked Catholics to support LGBT laws: “Being homosexual is a sin, but not a crime”
Clarification of the document on the baptism of trans people
In the document, the Dicastery details that transgender people “can receive baptism, under the same conditions as other faithful, if there are no situations in which there is a risk of generating public scandal or disorientation among the faithful”.
The same applies to anyone who has undergone hormone treatment or sex reassignment surgerypoints out the writing.
When asked if a same-sex couple can be considered parents of a child who must be baptized, the Dicastery responded that there should only be a “well-founded hope” that the child is educated in the Catholic religion.
