Pope Francis ate with homeless people in Saint Gilles

After leaving the nunciature, Pope Francis went to the Saint-Gilles church in Brussels, where he visited the homeless and refugees helped by the parish. He sat and listened with compassion to these people who so often have to live on the margins of society. The Pope thanked them very warmly. Among those present was Marie-Françoise Boveroulle, co-responsible for the church in Brussels, who is used to this Saturday morning breakfast.

As a gift, he received the parish’s craft beer, which builds links between all members of the parish and whose profits are donated to good causes. The Pope in turn offered the parish a statue of Saint Lawrence, who is known for his closeness to the poor, who are a “wealth of the Church”.
