Pope Francis Appoints 21 Cardinals including a Malaysian Migrant Family Member: Latest Updates and Information

Vatican City – Pope Francis elevated 21 people from different countries as cardinals, including a member of a family who migrated to Malaysia from Kerala years ago. The Pope has elevated the Bishop of Penang, Sebastian Francis, to the rank of Cardinal from Malaysia. Cardinal Sebastian Francis’ ancestors migrated to Malaysia in 1890 from Ollur, Thrissur.

The new cardinals have been appointed from the United States, France, Italy, Argentina, Switzerland, South Africa, Spain, Colombia, South Sudan, Hong Kong, Poland, Malaysia, Tanzania, Venezuela and Portugal. South Sudan has received its first cardinal and Malaysia its second cardinal.

With this, the number of members of the Cardinal Sangha has increased to 242. Of these, 137 have the right to consent to the conclave to elect the Pope. The rest are aged 80 years and above. They do not have the right to vote. Eighteen of the 21 new appointees are under the age of 80, so they will be eligible to vote in a possible conclave to elect a new pope.
