As is tradition at the solemn times of the Catholic calendar, Pope Francis addressed today, on Christmas Day, to believers around the world, bringing a message of peace, especially for those who live at war as is the case with the people Ukrainian.
“May our gaze turn to the faces of Ukrainian brothers and sisters who are living this Christmas in darkness, cold or far from their homes, due to the destruction caused by ten months of war. May the Lord make us available and ready to make concrete gestures of solidarity to help all those who suffer, and enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence the guns and put an immediate end to this senseless war! Unfortunately, people prefer to listen to other reasons, dictated by the logic of the world. But the voice of the Child Jesus, who listens to it?”, declared Pope Francis before the attentive gaze of Catholics who came to St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
However, the leader of the Catholic Church did not forget other conflicts in the world, even if with the war in Ukraine, they have passed into the background in the global news. Francis mentioned Syria, the tense situation in Jerusalem, but also Lebanon, Yemen, Myanmar and Iran as places where people lack peace and tranquility.
“Our time is experiencing a serious peace crisis also in other regions, in other theaters of this third world war. We think of Syria, still martyred by a conflict that has faded into the background but has not ended; and we think of the Holy Land, where in recent months violence and clashes have increased, with deaths and injuries. Let us implore the Lord that there, in the land where he was born, dialogue and commitment to mutual trust between Palestinians and Israelis will be resumed”, said the Holy Pontiff.
Pope Francis also asked that food not be used as a weapon, mentioning food security, in a clear warning to some African countries that suffer from the consequences of the shortage of cereals and other resources.
