Popcorn Time, the “pirate Netflix”, will (really) shut down

Is it definitive? The pirate platform Popcorn Time, sworn enemy of Netflix or even Amazon, should this time really close its doors, several months following having resurfaced. The developers behind Popcorn Time, also known under the nickname “Pirate Netflix”, sent an email to the American press in which they confirm the closure of the platform, indicates Bloomberg. Indeed, for several hours, the service has displayed an unusual logo with Xs instead of the eyes (symbols of death) as well as the mention RIP (Rest in peace).

This service, which searched for “torrent” links for its users, allowed illegally viewing films and series for free. Very popular with Internet users since its creation in 2014, it quickly entered the crosshairs of legal streaming platforms and the film industry. Closed twice in 2015 and 2021, under pressure from these two powerful sectors of activity, the platform had made a comeback each time.

If the original team has decided today to stop, it is however not impossible that others will take up the torch because the software code of Popcorn Time is freely available on the Internet.
