POP-ART complements the permanent collection at the MMKM Art Museum on August 29, 2024

“etc” is the title of the new addition to the permanent collection “PERMANENTA” in the private art museum MMKM in Mülheim an der Ruhrstraße 3.

The Mülheim surrealist Helmut Kottkamp created the artwork as part of a series of works.

The artist says:
Traffic sign: “etc”

A common traffic sign tells drivers to keep to the right. It might be a simple instruction, but this sign has an ironic, sarcastic message. The red color could also be blood.

The artwork implies:

“Drive/walk to the right… It might be safe… but it might not. There is a possibility that following this instruction could result in accidents that could be avoided. But the decision is up to the observer.”

This subtle undertone questions what should otherwise be a clear command, creating a feeling of uncertainty or cynicism. The ironic interpretation suggests that the seemingly safe path – driving/walking to the right – actually involves dangers that might have been better avoided if the instruction had been questioned.

The paradoxical nature of this instruction is intended to provoke thought and highlight the potential dangers inherent in even the most obvious instructions.
