Far fewer movie stars than usual attended the opening of the 80th Venice Film Festival on Wednesday night due to the Hollywood strike.
Aside from the members of the jury, which includes American director Damien Chazelle, New Zealand director Jane Campion and Irish director Martin McDonagh, most of those who walked the carpet were Italian celebrities and politicians.
Film directors gathered to participate in the festival expressed their support for the strikers in the United States.
“It’s clearly a difficult time in Hollywood, especially for the writers and working actors, but also for the crew,” said director Chazelle.
It is noteworthy that Chazelle, whose most important works include the films “La La Land” and “Whiplash”, is the chairman of the festival’s jury.
At the festival’s opening press conference, Oscar winner Chazelle wore a T-shirt that read “Writers’ Guild Is On Strike,” a reference to screenwriters who have quit their jobs in the United States since early May in protest of better wages and rules for dealing with artificial intelligence technology.
The same T-shirt was also worn by directors McDonagh and Laura Poitras, who sat in the front row, who are also members of the festival’s jury.
