The reason is the poor order situation, it was officially said, but the step is probably primarily related to the Fisker “Ocean”, the production of which was recently discontinued. According to Magna, discussions with employees are now starting and the first layoffs are likely to take place at the end of April.
As early as December 2023, a production line was switched from two-shift to single-shift operation. At that time it was assumed that this would only be the case “temporarily”, but now it will remain in single-shift operation for the time being. Around 450 employees were affected in December, and now another 500 will follow, although Magna is apparently still trying to place some of them in other areas.
The background is the production stop for the Fisker “Ocean”, of which around 10,000 were produced last year. Originally it was supposed to be 20,000 to 23,000 cars per year. The US electric car startup failed in talks to find a partner in March. What will happen next with the company is still unclear. The “Ocean” will therefore not be produced for the time being.
