Pollution: the ARS advises against the consumption of domestic chicken coops in Ile de France

Be careful if you have a chicken coop in your garden. Since April 19, 2023, the Ile de France Regional Health Agency (ARS) has advised once morest the consumption of eggs from domestic chicken coops in this region. This measure was decided as a result of an alert on dioxin concentration in non-marketed eggs from hens raised in domestic urban henhouses near the household waste incinerator located in Ivry.

Thus, the ARS decided to carry out a regional study of the levels of persistent organic pollutants in the urban environment. To do this, it took samples from 25 voluntary domestic chicken coops, including 14 located near the three main waste incinerators around Paris (Ivry-sur-Seine, Issy-Les-Moulineaux, Saint-Ouen).

Three families of organic pollutants

“The first results show contamination of all soil and egg samples by the three families of persistent organic pollutants analyzed (dioxins, furans and PCBs). This means that these three families of persistent organic pollutants are potentially present throughout the urban environment, and not specifically around incinerators,” summarizes the ARS. These pollutants might – in the long term – impact health with an increased risk of cancer, fertility and pregnancy disorders, metabolic effects such as diabetes for example and endocrine disrupting effects.

As a result, the Regional Health Agency recommends not consuming eggs from these henhouses until the data from a final analysis is received. For now, the origin of the contamination is not yet established and investigations are ongoing.

The ARS specifies that this study does not target egg production integrated into a commercial chain, which is subject to the controls provided for by regulation.
