Politicians intending to compete for the post of president are starting to collect signatures

Signatures can be collected until March 28. Applicants who have submitted application documents can start collecting them on Wednesday.

Currently, there are ten out of 14 registered political campaign participants. These are Giedrimas Jeglinskas, the former Deputy Minister of National Defense and NATO Deputy Secretary General nominated by the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos”, MP Andrius Mazuronis nominated by the Labor Party, President Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, former Minister of Health Protection, MP Aurelijs Veryga, nominated by the Union of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens, MP Remigijus Žemaitaitis, Eduardas Vaitkus, a doctor seeking to establish himself.

In addition, documents have already been submitted by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė nominated by the Fatherland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Dainius Žalimas nominated by the Freedom Party, lawyer Ignas Vėgėlė who is seeking to establish himself, and former army commander Valdas Tutkus.

The CEC plans to issue signature sheets for them on Wednesday from 9 am, with the exception of I. Šimonytė, who expressed her wish to collect voters’ signatures only electronically.

Voters will be able to support their favorite candidate electronically on the electronic service portal www.rinkejopuslapis.lt administered by the CEC.

A citizen of Lithuania who has the right to vote can support one candidate, several of them or all of them with his signature, but only one signature can be made for each candidate.

Signature collection sheets will be issued to the remaining four participants in the political campaign, Zenon Andrulėnais, Gintautas Kniukšta, Arūnas Rimkas and Žilvins Treigis, if they submit declaration documents.

Among the application documents, applicants must submit a certificate of the paid presidential election deposit of 8,995 euros. Deposits must be paid by prospective candidates from a personal account, they will be returned if candidates collect at least 7 percent. votes, will submit financial statements and will not commit gross violations.

Application documents can be submitted until March 8.

The presidential election will be held on May 12.
