Political trials ignite power struggle in Ecuador

The National Assembly and the Executive of Ecuador are involved in a new confrontation, but this time with the intervention of Justice, which has heated up tempers in the Ecuadorian political environment.

The fight arises after Assembly member Inés Alarcón, a member of the ruling National Democratic Agreement (ADN) party, presented a protection action before the Justice for the filing in Parliament of three impeachment requests against former Administration officials. by Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023): Pablo Arosemena, former Minister of Economy; Andrea Montalvo, former Secretary of Higher Education; and Sebastián Corral, former Secretary of Public Administration.

In July, Alarcón presented the appeal to try to reopen those political trials in a judicial unit in Iñaquito, north of Quito, but then withdrew it. On August 8, the assemblywoman re-entered her in Quitumbe, south of the Ecuadorian capital, Radio Pichincha reported.

The protection action was accepted by Judge Edgar Javier Romero Salazar, who ordered that the National Assembly resume the archived political trials. However, Parliament asserted that it will not abide by the ruling.

The Minister of Government, Arturo Félix Wong, spoke to celebrate the magistrate’s decision, thanking Alarcón for his “bravery” in presenting the appeal.

“He won a protection action presented by Assemblywoman Inés Alarcón, which will ensure that the order in which the political trials were filed is respected,” he said. For their part, Alarcón and the ADN bench insist that the National Assembly “must abide by” the decision of Justice. The political trials of the former Lasso officials were archived in July by the Parliamentary Oversight Commission, arguing that they had withdrawn the supporting signatures for it.
