On Saturday, political personnel decisions will be made in the west and east of the country. The SPÖ Vorarlberg elects Mario Leiter as the new state party chairman in Bregenz. The Burgenland Greens are looking for a successor to Regina Petrik – the current Eisenstadt local councilor Anja Haider-Wallner will most likely take over.
The 58-year-old leader is a city police officer in his hometown of Bludenz and has often been discussed as chairman of the Vorarlberg comrades in the past. After Leiter narrowly missed out on the mayor’s chair in Bludenz twice in 2015 and 2020, he had already more or less ended his political career. In June, however, the party presented him as the successor to Gabriele Sprickler-Falschlunger. Federal party chairman Andreas Babler has also announced that he will be elected Vorarlberg SPÖ leader.
Petrik announced her retirement as Green state spokeswoman in the easternmost federal state in the summer; she will remain club chairwoman in the state parliament for the time being. Until recently, only Haider-Wallner had applied for the now vacant position. The 44-year-old is an entrepreneur and co-founder of the cooperatively organized bar and employment project “Freu-Raum” in the state capital. The state assembly takes place in the Eisenstadt Technology Center. Secretary General Olga Voglauer will give the opening speech.
