The N-VA is by far the richest party with 34.1 million euros, even if its wealth has not increased in 2022. The party is almost twice as rich as the PS, which arrives in 2nd position with 18.8 million euros. The socialist party is followed by the Vlaams Belang (17.1 million), which has bailed out since its electoral victory in 2019.
Ecolo’s assets also grew strongly. The environmental party now has, like the MR, more than 14 million euros. The traditional Flemish parties – CD&V, Vooruit and Open VLD – have between 10 and 13 million, as do Les Engagés and the PTB/PVDA. Only Groen is worse off, with net assets of 6.6 million. Challenge is, meanwhile, relatively broke, with 362,000 euros in assets.
At the end of 2021, the parties had 157 million euros, compared to 133.5 million euros in 2020. Between 2020 and 2022, the parties have been enriched by a fifth. Going back even further in time, their assets have more than tripled. In 1999, the combined net assets amounted to only 56.4 million euros, according to a KU Leuven study on party financing.
2024 promises to be a costly year for political parties, with municipal, regional, federal and European elections.
