Political Parties Do Not Have the Right to Intervene in DPD Leadership – 2024-07-29 07:46:08

A number of DPD members approached DPD Chairman La Nyalla Mattalitti to convey criticism (Antara)

Executive Partner Director of Indonesian Politics Abubakar Solissa emphasized that political parties (parpol) do not have the right to intervene in the leadership of the DPD. He emphasized that the election of the DPD Chairperson is entirely the right of the members.

This was conveyed by Abubakar in response to the circulating photo of a meeting between DPD Chairman AA Lanyalla Mahmud Mattalitti and PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto. It is suspected that the meeting between the two was to build strength in maintaining the position of DPD Chairman.

“Normatively, political parties do not have the right to intervene in the leadership of the DPD. The rights lie entirely with the members,” said Abubakar when contacted, Jakarta, Friday, (26/7).

On the other hand, Abubakar agreed that maneuvers such as meetings often occur ahead of the DPD leadership election. So, he said, it is natural for the public to suspect that La Nyalla’s meeting with Hasto is an effort to maintain the DPD Chairman’s seat.

“However, it must be admitted that ahead of the DPD Leadership election, there are usually political maneuvers carried out, both by La Nyalla Mattalitti as the incumbent and other challengers who have the same obsession to become DPD Chairman,” he said.

Meanwhile, political observer and Executive Director of the Indonesian Survey and Polling (SPIN), Igor Dirgantara, regretted that the meeting was really to build strength to defend the position of DPD Chairman.

Igor said that the efforts of both of them have damaged democracy that has been running well in the country. According to him, La Nyalla as the head of the Senator should have given a good example in democracy.

“Yes, that is something that damages democracy, because the DPD chairman should uphold democracy,” said Igor.

Igor even touched on La Nyalla’s ‘arrogant’ attitude when leading the DPD plenary meeting some time ago. At that time, the meeting was chaotic because La Nyalla was suspected of acting arbitrarily in drafting changes to the rules of procedure to accommodate the mechanism for determining the next DPD leadership package.

“Previously, I also read about the chaotic creation of rules of procedure in the DPD, it’s ironic, isn’t it, that those who are individual representatives in a democracy are actually showing an undemocratic side in the current era,” said Igor.

Igor suspects that there is a personal interest in the effort to maintain the DPD Chairman’s seat. Moreover, there is news that Hasto and La Nyalla have a business together.

“Yes, that’s true, Hasto is being targeted by the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK). So it’s natural that the suspicion is aimed at securing business. If true, this is clearly damaging the democracy that has been running well,” said Igor.

Photos of the meeting between La Nyalla and Hasto circulated among journalists. The information circulating was that the meeting was an effort to build strength to reclaim the DPD Chairman’s seat from another candidate.

In fact, there is also news circulating that the effort to retain the DPD Chairman’s seat is to protect Hasto’s business with La Nyalla.
