The big surprise of the Salzburg election Sunday was delivered by the KPÖ: It far exceeded the forecasts and even came fourth with a result of 11.7 percent, ahead of the Greens and the Neos. The dark red success in the provincial capital Salzburg was even clearer: the communists achieved almost 22 percent here and became the second strongest force behind the ÖVP. With this, the KPÖ comes relatively close to the result in Graz, where the communists, with Elke Kahr, are the mayor. The Salzburg KPÖ top candidate Kay-Michael Dankl, previously a municipal councilor in Salzburg, has serious chances of getting into the mayoral runoff in the 2024 municipal council elections.
