Political Crisis Rocks Schaerbeek Municipality: Latest Updates and Developments

The political crisis is further accentuated within the municipality of Schaerbeek. After the departure of municipal councilors Sadik Köksal and the dean of the municipal council, Bernard Guillaume, for the MR, municipal councilor Emel Doganc also leaves the list of the mayor, Cécile Jodogne (Défi).

“We hope that Madame Dogancan will assume her departure with more style than the previous ones by returning her mandate, obtained on a list, with a program and thanks to voters whom she betrays today,” commented Cécile Jodogne.

The municipal councilor will initially remain independent. According to our information, she will undoubtedly eventually join a common list, alongside the MR.

“Just like Emel Köse and Yusuf Yildiz at the start of the legislature, Emel Dogancan decided to leave the Mayor’s List, following the refusal to grant her a mandate as alderwoman in addition to her mandate as municipal councilor”, indicated the cabinet of the mayor in a press release. “The announced departure of the Alderwoman of Fierlant, scheduled for the beginning of January, will require her replacement as Alderwoman of Commerce. Emel Dogancan showed interest in this position, even though she was conspicuous by her repeated absences in the Council, from the start of the legislature. Furthermore, Lorraine de Fierlant being elected under the banner of the Schaerbeek Liberals within the Mayor’s List, it is logical that it is an elected Schaerbeek Liberal who takes up the mandate of alderman. Ms. Dogancan was informed that logically she might not obtain this position.”

The consequence of this departure is clear for the Schaerbeek majority: one year before the end of the legislature, out of the 47 seats that make up the Schaerbeek council, the LB-Ecolo alliance now only has 23. There are therefore has more of a majority in Schaerbeek.

“Her departure doesn’t change much because she almost never came to the municipal council,” puts Cécile Jodogne’s spokesperson into perspective. “This Wednesday, we did not have a majority but we were more numerous than the opposition. So, we got our points across. Even if I recognize that in 22 years, I have never experienced such a difficult situation in the community.”

The Schaerbeek majority, who were already experiencing great difficulty in obtaining the necessary quorum presence, and passing their decisions, should see their situation deteriorate even further.
