Less than two weeks before the presidential elections, the Central American country is already experiencing far-reaching political confrontations.

“There is a group of corrupt politicians and officials who refuse to accept this result and have launched a plan to break the constitutional order and violate democracy,” Arévalo said four days after the Guatemalan Justice disqualified his party.

The president-elect pointed directly to the attorney general, Consuelo Porras; the special prosecutor against impunity; Rafael Curruchiche, to the seventh criminal judge; Fredy Orellana, and the Board of Directors of Congress, of being behind a series of actions that, he said, constitute a coup d’état.

According to Arévalo, the intention of these sectors, which he called corrupt officials and politiciansis to prevent the inauguration of himself as president, of the elected vice president and of the elected deputies in the last general elections in the country.

The president-elect said that the necessary political and legal actions are being taken to avoid the blow and called on the entire Guatemalan society to support these actions and prevent the popular will expressed on August 20 from being violated.

“We call on all organizations to join us in these actions in these four months and defend the vote of August 20 and the right of Guatemalans to live in a free and democratic society,” he commented.

Bernardo Arevalo won the second round of the elections on August 20 with the 60.91% of the votes in front of his rival Sandra Torreswho got 39,09% of the votes, according to data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal published on August 28. In this way, Arévalo became the first elected president emanating from a left movement in more than half a century in the Central American country.
