Political Barometer: Ranking and Voting Intentions in Wallonia, Brussels, and Flanders

2023-09-29 17:00:00

In Wallonia, the PS comes first in our Ipsos barometer, with 21.8% of voting intentions, significantly down compared to the 2019 elections (it obtained 26.1% of the votes), ahead of the PTB, which is progressing and reached 19.8% of voting intentions, its highest level ever reached in our polls. The PTB thus takes second place in the ranking from the MR, which is almost stable, with 19.7% of voting intentions.

Ecolo repeats its score from 2019: 14.9% of votes then, 14.9% of voting intentions today. But Les Engagés are no longer very far away: with 13.8% of voting intentions, Maxime Prévot’s party is doing better than in the 2019 elections (10.7% of the votes, it was then called CDH) and is recovering following many years of lagging behind. Challenge, for its part, settles down a little further: 2.7% of voting intentions, for 4.1% of votes in 2019.

The top 3 personalities: 1. Sophie Wilmès (MR), 2. Alexander De Croo (Open VLD), 3. Paul Magnette (PS)

The MR isolates itself in the lead in Brussels

In the Capital Region, the MR now stands out in the lead, since it is announced in our September Big Barometer 4 points ahead of Ecolo and 3.8 ahead of the PS (the margin of error being 4.2). The Liberal party, third in 2019, won its second best score since the elections, with 21.9%, and exceeded its 2019 result by 4.4 points.

The PS, on the other hand, is not at its best in the capital: it is stabilizing downward with 18.1% (less 0.5 points compared to our June survey), still 1.9 points from its last electoral result. And Ecolo, first in 2019 in Brussels and now third, toasts, obtaining its fourth worst score since the elections: 17.9%. As for the PTB, if it is still 3 points above its electoral score, at 15.3%, it is no longer reaching the heights predicted by our March barometer.

On the other hand, we will have a smile on the side of the Engagés, who achieved their best score since the elections, with 6.5%. And we will grimace at Défi, which achieved its worst result: 8%.

The trio of favorite personalities of the people of Brussels, however, does not change: it is still made up of Sophie Wilmès, Alexander De Croo and Paul Magnette.

And Flandre, le Vlaams Belang pastor

With 25.8% voting intentions, Vlaams Belang had not been so high in the polls since June 2021 and it is more than seven percentage points above its score of May 2019. Behind, the N-VA (20.2%) and Vooruit (15.4), both down slightly, complete the podium.

Another notable development: the increase in CD&V. Pointed at 10.7% voting intentions in June 2023, the party now rises to 12.2% and is therefore breaking away from the PVDA, which was close behind it in the poll last June. PVDA which, despite a slight decline, recorded its second best poll in the last four years. Behind, the Open VLD is sinking and reaching the lowest rate (8.2%) recorded in the Grand Barometer since the 2019 elections (where it had 13.5% of the votes). Just like Groen, who closes the ranking at 6.4% voting intentions.

If the three favorite personalities of the Flemings remain Bart De Wever, Conner Rousseau and Alexander De Croo, the president of the N-VA takes over lead to that of Vooruit, while the current Prime Minister remains in third place.
