After recent days of tension between Warsaw and Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made an unannounced stopover in Poland on Saturday to thank and award two Polish volunteers. On the way back from the United States and Canada, Zelenski stopped in the eastern Polish city of Lublin, Polish media reported. He therefore did not meet any Polish government representatives.
“On the way to Ukraine, I had the honor of honoring the efforts of Polish citizens in Lublin, volunteers, attentive hearts,” Zelensky explained in the online service X.
The stopover took place once morest the backdrop of currently tense relations between Kiev and Warsaw. Last week, Poland extended its embargo on Ukrainian grain to protect the interests of its own farmers, sparking an open crisis with Kiev.
Ukraine then filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO) once morest Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, which had also declared that they would not comply with the end of trade restrictions on Ukrainian grain decided by the EU Commission.
On Tuesday at the UN, Zelensky said that some countries were only feigning solidarity and indirectly supporting Russia. Warsaw then summoned the Ukrainian ambassador. Finally, Poland announced that it wanted to limit arms deliveries to Ukraine to contracts that had already been concluded.
