Polish opposition leader Tusk wants to become head of government

Almost two months after the election in Poland, the previous opposition leader Donald Tusk wants to carry out the transfer of power and be elected as the new Prime Minister. The former EU Council President wants to make a government statement for his coalition of three parties this Tuesday (9 a.m.). The vote of confidence in the new government is expected in the afternoon (3 p.m.) in the lower house of parliament (Sejm) in Warsaw.

In the parliamentary elections in Poland on October 15, the national conservative ruling party PiS was once again the strongest force, but with 194 seats it can no longer form the government. The pro-European opposition parties together won a clear majority of 248 of the 460 seats in the Sejm.

However, the PiS and its President Andrzej Duda delayed the handover of power for as long as was constitutionally possible. Duda initially commissioned the previous Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to form a new government. He faced a vote of confidence in the Sejm on Monday, but as expected he failed.

Tusk (66) was Polish Prime Minister from 2007 to 2014. His new government is expected to ease relations with the European Union (EU) and its neighbor Germany. The PiS got into conflicts with Brussels, primarily due to regressions in the rule of law. Sharp anti-German tones have characterized national conservative politics in recent years.
