Polio: A Global Rotarian Conference Revealing the Impact and Importance of Vaccination

On Wednesday evening, October 25, Rotarians gathered for a conference on a terrible disease, polio. One of his victims gave his testimony.

For 35 years, Rotarians around the world have funded research into polio, a disease that has almost disappeared. Between almost and completely, the nuance is crucial. Polio is very contagious, a single case can generate 200,000 cases. Marie-Hélène Chatel was the first to speak to talk regarding the polio from which her grandfather suffered. The conference was prepared by Stéfania La Bua, general practitioner and Rotarian. In his absence, Elise Osmond, president of the Chaumontais Rotary, took charge of the presentation.

The culprit is the poliovirus. Present in contaminated water, it mainly attacks children under 5 years old and destroys their motor neurons, causing paralysis of the limbs or worse, the lungs within a few hours. There is no cure. On the other hand, since the 1950s, vaccines have been completely effective: 350,000 cases in 1888, only 6 cases in 2021.

For Christiane, polio broke out suddenly on July 14, 1959, when she was 17 months old. Christiane indicated the following-effects she has of this condition: a paralyzed raised foot, asymmetrical growth of her lower limbs. With the transplant operations, his youth was painful and, quite frankly, sacrificed. She hammered home a message: “get vaccinated and don’t miss any boosters”.
