PSSI explained that the competition pause policy during the U-23 Asian Cup is to maintain the condition of the Indonesian National Team and League 1 clubs. The competition pause policy will allow the U-23 National Team to fully concentrate on the U-23 Asian Cup. On the other hand, the club has not lost ground, especially in important phases of the competition.
PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir understands that PSSI must make the best decision because the national team and competition are equally important. Erick wants the national team’s breakthrough achievements at international level to be in line with competitions that accommodate all clubs.
“As the highest authority for Indonesian football, PSSI certainly has an obligation to prepare the national team and also defend the interests of clubs. Therefore, the policy of temporarily pausing competitions during the U-23 Asian Cup is the best step and solution,” said Erick to journalists, Sunday (31 /3).
Erick understands that currently many clubs are entering crucial competition agendas. Therefore, dispensation and fair treatment must be given to each club.
“Because PSSI understands that at the same time the club is faced with a very tight agenda. There are teams that are competing to enter the championship round, there are some teams competing in the middle table, and there are also those that are struggling and escaping relegation. So that there are no space that the player’s call-up is detrimental to the club,” he said.
Erick said that from the start the league had given dispensation to clubs whose U-23 players were called up. This is like the treatment that the club whose player is called up can not use the conditions for using U-23 players.
Currently, said Erick, a temporary pause in competition is the best solution for equal treatment. Erick hopes that with the league paused, coach Shin Tae-Yong can call up his best squad. With the best squad available, the momentum of the national team which is currently very good can be maintained.
“Moreover, the national team is experiencing a positive trend. Moreover, the national team is in good momentum following recording Sea Games gold, a history of qualifying for the first time in the last 16 of the Asian Cup, and having the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup.
