“Policeman from Germinalt’s ‘ripou’ area in partial admission, remains under custody”

The police officer from the Germinalt area, covering towns such as Thuin, Gerpinnes, Ham-sur-Heure/Nalinnes, and Montigny-le-Tilleul, appeared before the Charleroi council chamber on Thursday morning following being charged and placed under arrest. This is the standard procedure, with the council chamber deciding within five days whether to keep the suspect in preventive detention.

The officer was arrested by his own colleagues on Monday morning and had his preventive detention extended by one month. The charges he faced were serious, even more so due to his position as a police officer. These include participation in a criminal association, sale of arms, illegal possession of ammunition, acquisition and possession of narcotics, and violation of professional secrecy.

The accused has admitted to breaching professional secrecy, leading to concerns regarding sensitive information being leaked to malicious actors. The investigation is still ongoing, and the involvement of the police officer in the alleged offenses needs to be clarified. The accused will appear before the council chamber once more in a month. Substantial investigative duties, such as analyzing the accused’s computer equipment, are being carried out for the case.

This Thursday morning, the police officer from the Germinalt area (Thuin, Gerpinnes, Ham-sur-Heure/Nalinnes and Montigny-le-Tilleul) appeared for the first time before the Charleroi council chamber. Usual procedure when a suspect has just been charged and placed under an arrest warrant. Within five days, the accused must appear before the council chamber and this chamber decides whether or not the suspect should be kept in preventive detention.

Arrested Monday morning by his own colleagues, the agent of the Germinalt police zone saw his preventive detention confirmed for an additional month.

Admission of breach of professional secrecy

The charges with which the accused is charged are very serious, given his position: participation in a criminal association, sale of arms, illegal possession of ammunition, acquisition and possession of narcotics and violation of the professional secret. If he was an ordinary citizen, the charges would already be very serious. Here it is a police officer. Beyond his swearing in, beyond our institutions’ need to set an example, he also had access to sensitive information in the course of his duties: what investigations are open, what elements are known, who is targeted by an operation or surveillance, etc. Which, of course, makes all the charges even more serious.

According to our information, the defendant has confessed to having violated his professional secrecy. At the time of this writing, it is still unclear what would have been leaked and to whom. It is legitimate to fear that sensitive information might have ended up in the hands of malicious people or people closely monitored by the courts, given the participation in an association also with which the accused is accused. Regarding the sale of weapons, the police officer swears not to have been involved in any transaction.

The investigation, which has only just begun, will have to clarify certain gray areas and highlight the real involvement of the police officer in the alleged offenses. Particularly substantial investigative duties are also being carried out, for the purposes of the case. An in-depth analysis of the private and professional computer equipment of the accused will be carried out. In a month, the latter will appear once more in the council chamber.

The case of the police officer from the Germinalt area is a stark reminder of the importance of professional integrity and the consequences of violating it. As the investigation continues, the potential harm caused by the accused’s breach of professional secrecy cannot be overlooked. The fact that a police officer, entrusted with sensitive information, is now facing charges of participation in a criminal association, sale of arms, illegal possession of ammunition, acquisition and possession of narcotics, and violation of professional secrecy is deeply concerning. As the investigation progresses, it is vital that all parties involved receive a fair and impartial hearing. The outcome of this case will not only impact the accused but also serve as a cautionary tale for all law enforcement officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
