Police Violence at Mechelen: The Truth Uncovered

”Yesterday’s trip was quite unusual because, in our stand, there were an impressive number of Malinois spotters (between 15 and 20), even more than the Charleroi spotters. The Malinois were clearly milling around in the stands, wanting to be as visible as possible when, in reality, there was clearly no need. Apart from an organized crackdown (pyrotechnics is not a crime remember) and 2 or 3 pots of smoke, the supporters behaved impeccably.

At the exit of the stadium, the spotters and police officers present had formed a cordon just between the Charleroi Stewards bus and the first bus of our supporters and were already waiting with batons in hand. What followed, and this is where we enter into surrealism, is that these people, originally supposed to protect us and ensure that order is maintained, began to provoke and stare at the Carolos supporters which led to the inevitable, namely a Spotters-police confrontation once morest Supporters. From all the testimonies collected, whether from local spotters (we thank them for their honesty, they are in no way incriminated by yesterday’s problem), fancoaching (Club – Supporters relationship) or even certain Stewards, the spotters/police were clearly just waiting for that, to be able to “hit the Walloon”. They gassed and beat everywhere, people who were urinating away from the action were gassed, a person with reduced mobility received baton blows, and so on, but to none moment during the clashes they did not attempt to arrest one of ours (something which would have been the case if, really, the problem came from the Carolos supporters).

We asked the Charleroi spotters that a report be made once morest the police zone present in this location. We are also studying the possibility of a collective complaint once morest the same police but it also seemed important to us to share what happened yesterday. It is abnormal for supporters who have just spent an evening at the stadium, who have just gone to watch a match peacefully, to be taken advantage of in this way by “police forces” without any real reason, just because some people want to let off steam.

To you, dear supporters of other clubs, who will come across this press release, we are also doing this to warn you of what may happen when you travel to Mechelen because, apparently, the police in this area find you too nervous… Although, apart from the score, everything was going well until then.

For the supporters present in Mechelen yesterday,

So that these acts do not go unpunished.

Earlier in the day, the Mechelen police explained that “a dozen supporters” had been fined and that “a number of pyrotechnic equipment had been lit”.
