“The court decision was received today, the officers contacted them, it was agreed that they will come to the police station today,” R. Matonis told BNS.
“Yes, they will be delivered to the prison. I think so,” he added when asked if that would happen as early as Friday.
According to R. Matonis, the convicts should present themselves to the territorial police institutions according to their place of residence: E. Masiulis – in Klaipėda, R. Kurlianskis and V. Gapšys – in Vilnius.
The representative of the prison service, Virginija Vervečkaitė, informed BNS on Friday that the convicts will initially be brought to Kaunas prison.
From there, they will be assigned to specific places of punishment within 10 working days.
“E.Masiulis and V.Gapšys will be assigned to Kaunas prison (because they are politicians), while R.Kurlianskis can be assigned to Pravieniškių 1st, 2nd, Alytus, Marijampole, Vilnius prisons. The decision on this has not yet been made,” the representative of the Prison Service informed BNS.
On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal of Lithuania changed the decision of the court of first instance and sentenced all the defendants in the political corruption case of the concern “MG Grupė” (previously called “MG Baltic”), some of them were sentenced to actual prison sentences.
More than 1.1 million and almost 377 thousand were allocated to “MG Grupa”, the Liberal Movement in the ruling majority and the opposition Labor Party, respectively. and more than 301 thousand EUR fines.
Raimondis Kurlianskis, the former vice president of MG Baltic, was sentenced to six years in prison and 25,000 fines. EUR fine, the former leader of the Liberal Movement, Eligijas Masiulis, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
Labor Party representative Vytautas Gapšys was also found guilty and sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
On Friday, V. Gapši’s lawyer Mindaugas Barkauskas submitted a cassation complaint to the Supreme Court, he requests a full acquittal of the defendant and postponement of the sentence imposed by the Lithuanian Court of Appeal until the case is examined by the LAT.
The lawyers of the other convicts intend to submit similar complaints and requests to suspend the execution of the sentence later, but admit that the defendants will enter the prison even before that.
