Police shot and injured a woman who made threats at a Paris station

According to witnesses, the woman, who had her body and face fully covered, shouted “Allahu akbar” (“God is greater”) and threatened during rush hour, a police source said.

According to him, “the police fired because they feared for their safety.”

Police said officers opened fire after she did not respond to their warnings, after a passenger on a Paris-bound commuter train called emergency services to report the woman making threats.

She threatened to blow herself up, the Paris prosecutor’s office said, adding that police fired one shot into the abdomen, which caused a life-threatening injury.

She was hospitalized for emergency treatment, prosecutors said.

No explosives or other weapons were found on the woman, a police source said.

Police have opened two investigations, prosecutors said. One of them will investigate the woman’s actions, while the other will determine whether the police used a firearm justifiably.

The Francois Mitterrand library metro and train station, southeast of the center of the capital, was evacuated, police said.

In France, the level of threat preparedness has been raised to the highest after the October 13 incident in which a teacher was stabbed to death at a school in Arras. The French government called the knife attack an act of Islamist terrorism.

Many in France, which has a large Muslim and Jewish population, also fear the consequences of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the Jewish state’s retaliation in the Gaza Strip.

Dozens of airports, train stations and tourist sites have been evacuated in recent weeks due to bomb threats.
