The incident occurred in Cherapont in the Gouvy commune on Monday evening around 7pm. The police shot a man who eventually died due to his injuries. According to the mayor of Gouvy, Véronique Léonard, the police were alerted of an aggressive, intoxicated man that was behaving in a threatening manner. When they approached him, the man was carrying two knives and failed to comply with their orders, ultimately making a sudden movement towards them which resulted in the police officer firing his weapon. The Public Prosecutor has started a judicial inquiry and appointed experts to investigate the case. The Cherapont campsite manager expressed shock towards the incident, as it was the first time something like this had occurred on the property. The victim, originally from Liège, came to visit his mother who was residing in a caravan at the campsite.
A tragedy occurred on Monday around 7 p.m. in Cherapont in the commune of Gouvy. Police opened fire on a man. He died of his injuries.
” The facts took place, early Monday evening, at the Cherapont campsite, underlines the mayor of Gouvy, Véronique Léonard. “Police alerted me around 7:15 p.m. An inebriated man was aggressive. The police responded. This person is deceased.”
The Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office has just communicated on this case.
“The police went to the campsite because a 40-year-old man from Liège was walking around drunk and making suicidal remarks”specifies Etienne Donnay, public prosecutor. When the police approached him, he was carrying two knives and appeared threatening. He did not respond to the orders and made a sudden movement towards the police. One of them opened fire.”
A judicial inquiry has been opened. Experts have been appointed. The two police officers, in intervention, will be heard. The forties, originally from Liège, was not domiciled at the campsite. He had come to visit his mother.
The manager of the Cherapont campsite is in shock. “I was not there when the events occurred”he says. I did not attend the intervention of the police. When I returned, the police explained to me what had happened. This is the first time something like this has happened on my property. I knew this Liégeois by sight. I never had any particular problem with him. His mother lives in a caravan but she is not domiciled in Cherapont.”
