A police operation in Leipzig ends fatally: a man is shot during a search of his apartment and later dies in hospital. In the apartment, evidence should be secured in a robbery, then it comes to a “threatening deployment situation”.
During an operation in a Leipzig apartment, a 36-year-old was shot dead by the police on Wednesday followingnoon. The exact circumstances of his death are still unclear, according to the police. The 36-year-old was suspected of having something to do with robberies in a supermarket on the same day. Therefore, a judge then ordered the search of the apartment in Paunsdorf, where the man was staying, to secure evidence.
During the search, the man apparently defied orders and so there was a “threatening operational situation” around 4 p.m., the police said. “The deployed police officers used firearms.” The 36-year-old was seriously injured at first, and later the man died in a hospital despite quick medical help. A spokeswoman for the police in Leipzig gave no information on how many officers were involved in the search and how often shots were fired.
She also did not comment on any other questions, citing the ongoing investigation. “The public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig and the police are conducting intensive investigations to clarify the circumstances of what happened,” it said in a statement. “This also affects the police officers deployed,” as is usual in these cases. The crime scene group of the Saxony State Criminal Police Office and other emergency services are still on site.
