Dresden. In Dresden, the large-scale operation of heavily armed police forces and fire brigades has ended. A suspected armed man was spotted at a window in the early followingnoon. A stretch of road was closed, residents brought to safety. The emergency services tried to establish contact with the man. A fire later broke out in the apartment. Apparently the perpetrator died.

  • On Wednesday at 2:20 p.m. on Rudolf-Leonhard-Straße in the Hechtviertel, passers-by saw a young man at the window of an apartment who had a pistol with him.
  • Police and a special task force (SEK) were on site.
  • The area between Erlenstrasse and Königsbrücker Platz was closed. Residents were not allowed into their homes. Direct neighbors were taken to safety as a precaution.
  • DVB buses were made available for local residents to warm up.
  • Attempts to contact the man were unsuccessful.
  • In the evening, a fire broke out in the apartment.
  • Later, emergency services found a lifeless person in the apartment, whose identity has not yet been clarified.

Update 11:35 p.m.: Information from the police

After 11 p.m., the police issued a message with more detailed information regarding the operation. The man’s pistol was apparently a blank pistol.

After throwing them away, he fiddled with a long gun at the window and threatened to detonate a homemade explosive device if the police came into the apartment. Against this background, the USBV group of the Saxony State Criminal Police Office, which is responsible for securing and defusing unconventional explosive and incendiary devices, was called in.

Several attempts to communicate with the man over a longer period of time were unsuccessful.

Around 9:45 p.m., emergency services finally found a fire in the affected apartment. The SEK then gained access to the apartment. However, due to the fire, they were unable to get to the person they were looking for.

After extinguishing by the fire department, the officials found a lifeless person in the apartment. An emergency doctor might only determine death.

The identity has not yet been clarified beyond doubt. Police investigations are continuing.

There is no longer any smoke on the street. Apparently the fire might be extinguished. The police and fire brigade gained access to the apartment.

Meanwhile, drunks are arguing with the police outside because they won’t be let through.

Update 10:27 p.m.: Access not confirmed

A police spokesman says the man has not yet been caught. Access cannot be confirmed.

Update 9.50 p.m .: Banging noises and fire brigade drives up

A reporter at the scene reports five bangs coming from the direction of the house. It’s a dull thump regarding two seconds apart. The police also apparently spoke to the man via an announcement. The fire brigade pulls up on the street with a fire engine. A ladder is extended. Smoke can be seen around the house. The police speak of a massive fire in the apartment in question. The ambulance is requested.

Update 9.30 p.m .: Apparently two guns in the apartment

According to the police, the man, who is still in the apartment on the first floor of Rudolf-Leonhard-Strasse 31, is apparently in possession of two weapons: a pistol and a long gun, i.e. a submachine gun or something similar. Can’t tell if they’re sharp. The police have cordoned off the area and are securing it.
