The Brussels council chamber on Tuesday postponed the file relating to Adil’s death until September 5. In question, the lawyer for one of the three police officers charged requested additional investigative duties following the filing of a new document in the file. This would report racist remarks that were made by the police officer in question. On April 10, 2020, Adil Charrot, a 19-year-old young man, died in Anderlecht following a chase with the police.
This Wednesday, Thierry Belin, national secretary of the National Union of Police and Security Personnel, answered questions from Caroline Fontenoy in the RTL info 7 p.m.:
Caroline Fontenoy: – We understand it’s a delicate matter, what is your opinion on this file?
Thierry Bellin: – I am extremely shocked to see that the secrecy of the instruction is flouted in this way. We ask justice to work calmly. It seems difficult to me when we throw information into the press. I had to see that it is a cabal that is clearly mounted once morest this policeman. But from the start, we’ve been trying to blame the police and accuse them of having deliberately killed the man named Adil. Let’s be clear, it’s a tragedy. It is a young man of 19 who loses his life. It’s a bereaved family. But it was Adil’s behavior that caused his death. And when I read that it is said that it was the police who hit Adil, but it is totally the opposite. So here, it’s a cabal that is set up once morest a policeman who is called a racist, etc. I can tell you that he has very broad support within the police area in which he works. He took courses, he passed exams to move up in rank. His head of corps is not a comedian at all. He is someone who is extremely demanding in terms of quality of work. And if he accepted that he enters the zone as a principal inspector, it is because he is worth it and that he is a good element.
Caroline Fontenoy: – So, apart from this particular case, when a case of racism or sexism is proven within the police, what are the penalties provided for?
Thierry Bellin : – There’s a whole series of things. The presumption of innocence still prevails, of course, but there is no place for racists, xenophobes and sexists among us. It has to be said very clearly. We are in one of the most controlled professions there is. And as soon as a case like this can arise, measures are taken immediately to remove people. And the penalties fall when they have to fall. There is absolutely no debate on this.
Caroline Fontenoy: – Does this often happen to the thousands of police officers in our country? Do you often have these kinds of complaints to deal with?
Thierry Bellin: To tell you that there are no racists in the police would be stupid of me because we are more than 50,000 members of staff and therefore unfortunately there are always a few cretins who manage to get through the cracks. But they never last long with us because they have no place with us and fortunately they are a minority.
