The police intervened on Saturday around 1:00 p.m. during a solidarity action at Delhaize Chazal, indicates the collective which brings together sympathizers, workers and trade unionists.

According to Thomas Englert, union secretary of the ACV-CSC, the police intervention was carried out “in a heavy-handed manner”, for no apparent reason. According to Mr. Englert, around a hundred people took part in the action.

The action started on Saturday around 10:30 a.m. at Delhaize Chazal, near Place Dailly. It was organized by the Brussels Solidarity Committee of “Delhaiziens”, which has been leading actions for months once morest the decision of the head office which wants to franchise the 128 subsidiaries.

“For eight months, Delhaize management has ignored the employee collective. They attack working conditions as well as democratic rights and ignore the demands of employees,” Mr. Englert told the Belga news agency.

At Saturday’s action there were, according to Mr. Englert, supporters, customers, workers and trade unionists. Leaflets were distributed at the entrance to the store.

The police were present en masse at the start of the action, “with more than twenty police officers”, he says. “At one point, the situation was very tense and the police intervened harshly and without reason,” explains Mr. Englert.

The twenty police officers allegedly blocked the main entrance to Delhaize in a “brutal” manner around 1 p.m. In turn, the activists blocked the entrance to Delhaize with shopping carts to allow the action to continue. Agents and activists reportedly came into physical contact. Shortly following, calm returned and Delhaize was closed, Mr. Englert explains.
