Police Force Deployment and Evacuation at Sainte-Union Educational Center in Tournai: Bomb Threat Update

2023-11-07 10:42:00

A large police force was deployed this Tuesday morning around the Sainte-Union Educational Center in Tournai, due to a bomb threat shortly following students entered class.

The threat was taken very seriously; both staff and students of the establishment, located along the Chaussée de Lille, were evacuated. Everyone was welcomed into the nearby sports hall.

Given the proximity of the Val-Itma school buildings, the students and the teaching team were also forced to go to the sports center, where an HQ was established. Some 700 students are welcomed there. A social worker came to the scene.

The Chaussée de Lille was quickly closed to traffic, as well as the side roads between the boulevard and rue de la Culture.

Four dogs were dispatched to the scene for the search. The situation is far from easy at Val Itma because everything had to be stopped in the kitchen and in the workshops. Coincidentally, the Val Itma did an evacuation exercise a short time ago, which turned out to be very useful today…

The search of the premises of the Sainte-Union will continue for some time given the size of the school… No lessons will be given until tomorrow, therefore. Students will only be able to leave the sports hall when the police give the green light…
