Eight police zones – Basse-Meuse, Flémalle, Fagnes, Pays de Herve, Vesdre, Weser-Gohl, Hesbaye-Ouest, Meuse Hesbaye – and the Highway Police were mobilized for this integrated action, coordinated by the Federal Police of Liège .

“1,663 vehicles were checked as part of this planned operation until 5 a.m. on Saturday morning,” the Liège federal police said on Monday. “Drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs were the main targets. Of the 45 drivers who had consumed alcohol, the breathalyzer test of 22 of them showed a level greater than 0.35 mg per liter of air expelled. The police also intercepted 9 people driving under the influence of drugs.”

Up to €4,000 fine

In terms of sanctions, the amount of immediate collections from the operation amounts to more than 4,000 euros. “In addition to the financial fines, temporary driving bans of 3 or 6 hours, depending on the blood alcohol levels recorded, were imposed. And for more serious cases, the driving license was immediately withdrawn: 20 drivers left as passengers or pedestrians!”

There are therefore still 3.25% of motorists checked who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and further endanger the safety of everyone on the roads. The Coordination and Support Department (DCA) of the Federal Police of Liège regularly organizes and coordinates this type of action at the provincial level to fight once morest the scourge of alcohol and drug driving.
