Police arrest an opposition councilor from Táchira accused of corruption

Venezuelan police officials detained opposition councilor Jaiberth Zambrano in Táchira, accused of corruption offenses, the governor of that state, Freddy Bernal, reported Wednesday.

“The San Cristóbal Police captured Jaiberth Zambrano, 36 years old, who is a practicing councilor and who had an arrest warrant,” Bernal reported through a message posted on Twitter.

The official assured that Zambrano is accused of the crimes of fraudulent embezzlement, own corruption, illegal obtaining of profit in acts of public administration and conspiracy.

The governor requested “the full weight of the law” for this incumbent councilor, who belongs to the opposition Democratic Action party.

Zambrano was elected as a councilor in the November 21 elections in which Venezuela voted for new regional and local authorities throughout the country.

In addition, he was director of Civil Protection of the Táchira state during the previous administration of the opposition Leidy Gómez, who spoke regarding the arrest and assured that it was not a capture, but a “voluntary surrender.”

“There was no capture: truth and reason faced political orders that use ‘Justice,'” the former governor wrote on her Twitter account.
