The thieves went out four times. For the first time on May 16 of this year. They drove a small van on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) to a closed construction site in the municipality of St. Pankraz, looked out for goods that they might resell and struck gold: they unwound the copper cables stored there, cut them and loaded them into the cargo area of the transporter.

The 33 and 34-year-old men from Poland drove directly across the border to their home country with the cables, which have a cross-section of around 40 millimeters. During the four trips, they loaded 496 meters of copper cable with a total value of 10,000 euros.

Finally, on Tuesday, the final stop was on the construction site: officials from the Klaus Motorway Police Inspectorate caught the two Poles attempting theft and arrested them. After consultation with the public prosecutor’s office, the men were taken to the Garsten prison.
