The parliamentary elections have begun in Poland. This Sunday, a good 29 million eligible voters are called to vote on the distribution of the 460 seats in the Sejm and the 100 seats in the Senate, the less important second chamber of parliament. The first forecasts are expected following the polls close at 9 p.m.
According to surveys, the national conservative ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) is likely to remain the strongest force, but will miss an absolute majority. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki would then have to rely on the ultra-right Konfederacja to form a government. They rejected a coalition with the PiS in the election campaign.
According to the surveys, the liberal-conservative Citizens’ Coalition (KO) of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk is in second place, close behind the PiS. If she wins the election, she might form a coalition with the left-wing Lewica alliance and the Christian-conservative Third Way. The prerequisite for this, however, is that the Third Way, as a merger of two parties, makes it over the eight percent hurdle that applies to such electoral alliances in Poland.
