With her book Unorthodox (2012), Deborah Feldman became a darling of the liberal Jewish community and a star, at the latest when Netflix made a film of it in 2020. In it, she autobiographically tells the story of a young woman who grows up in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Satmar Hasids in Brooklyn, breaks away from her family and frees herself. Feldman himself moved to Berlin in 2014 and has been something of an intellectual darling in the German discourse space ever since. Her book published in September Jew fetish but caused mixed reactions. Passages in which, among other things, Feldman sharply criticized Israel or accused quota refugees who had once migrated from the USSR to Germany of protecting their Jewishness in order to be able to live in Europe caused a lack of understanding and criticism.
