“Black Friday” price cuts will be extended this year to coal sales in Poland, the largest Polish mining company announced on Monday in a press release published on X (formerly Twitter).

The PGG group (Polish mining group) is offering a 200 zloty (approximately 45.90 euros) discount, or 15% to 18%, per tonne of coal purchased online, during this commercial operation called “Black Weeks” which began on Monday .
As Poland experienced the first snowfall this weekend and coal prices usually spike at this time of year, the company announced its second significant price reduction in a week, having already decreed a drop of 200 zlotys per tonne last Monday.
These repeated sales demonstrate the complicated situation in which Polish coal companies find themselves, which accumulated significant stocks last year, before facing sluggish demand this year.
Around 20% of Poles still heated with coal in 2021, compared to 36% in 2018, according to the National Statistics Office GUS.
This significant drop is explained in particular by massive state subsidies aimed at replacing coal stoves, the main cause of poor air quality, with less polluting alternatives.
