In Poland, the suspense is ending and this is good news for pro-Europeans. According to exit polls, the centrist opposition won the parliamentary majority in the legislative elections this Sunday. The ruling nationalist populists, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) and the far right together were defeated.

Immediately following the exit polls were released, Polish pro-European opposition leader Donald Tusk said:

“Poland won, democracy won, we drove them out of power (…) it’s the end of this bad period, it’s the end of PiS rule.”

The three centrist opposition parties, Donald Tusk’s Citizens’ Coalition (KO), the Third Way Christian Democrats and the Left, together won 248 seats in the 460-member parliament, compared to 212 seats for PiS. and the Confederation (far right) combined, according to initial projections.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the Law and Justice party, acknowledged that the outcome was uncertain.

He told his supporters gathered at his headquarters that his party’s result, with nearly 37 percent of the vote according to exit polls, was a great success, but he acknowledged that he might not be able to to retain power.

“The question before us is whether this success can translate into a new mandate of our government, and we do not know yet. But we must remain hopeful and know that, whether we are in power or in the opposition, we will implement this project in different ways”, Kaczynski said.

The exit poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Ballot counting is still underway and the state election commission hopes to have final results by Tuesday morning.
