Polish border police arrested a deserter from the Russian army.

“We captured a deserter from Russiahe had his military papers with him,” border guard spokeswoman Katarzin Zdanovic told AFP.

“This is a 41-year-old man who illegally crossed the border from Belarus to Polandin northeastern Poland,” he added without elaborating.

According to Polish media, the man was unarmed and dressed in civilian clothes.

The spokeswoman could not comment on whether this was the first case of its kind since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Belarus and Russia are members of a military alliance that brings together many countries of the former Soviet Union.

According to information from protothema, Moscow and Minsk are very close partners in the defense sector, and the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko allowed Russian forces to attack Ukraine from his country’s territory in February 2022, while tens of thousands of Russian troops are stationed there.

Polish border guards recently reported that around 100 illegal attempts by people to cross Belarus’ border into Poland take place every day — mostly nationals from countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
