“This is not regarding medicine, but regarding human rights,” – this is how Donald Tusk commented on the Sejm’s decision to transfer draft amendments on abortion to an emergency commission.
The Polish Sejm sent all draft amendments to abortion laws proposed by members of the ruling coalition to an emergency commission for consideration.
“This is regarding making it legal for women’s health and safety. A woman should know that the state cares regarding her and does not attack her. It is the woman, and not someone else, who can and should decide for herself issues related to her health, future and motherhood. I always talk regarding this with some concern and sadness, because I see that there are a lot of emotions in society regarding this, and that sentiment is divided almost equally. The same thing is happening in parliament, so we probably still have a long way to go,” said the Polish prime minister.
The projects of the Civic Coalition and the New Left provide for the liberalization of the law on abortion and the possibility of terminating a pregnancy up to the 12th week without explanation. In addition, the left’s second bill would decriminalize abortion and abortion care.
The draft amendments proposed by the Third Way faction, in turn, involve a return to the compromise on abortion that existed before the 2020 Constitutional Court decision, which provides for the possibility of abortion in case of irreversible fetal defects.
Currently, abortion in Poland is only allowed in cases where the mother’s life is at risk or if the fetus was conceived as a result of rape.
