The Polish Boxing Association has decided to refuse to participate in the men’s and women’s world championships due to the admission of Russian athletes there. This was stated by the vice-president of the association, Maciej Demel, quoted by Sport.pl.
“After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, we decided that we would not compete in competitions in which Russians and Belarusians would take part. Since then, we have not adopted a new resolution, so the old one remains in force. We are consistent in our actions,” Demel said.
A third country decided to boycott the World Boxing Championship because of Russia
Earlier, the US Boxing Federation (USA Boxing) refused to participate in the men’s and women’s world championships. The reason there was called the decision of the International Boxing Association (IBA) to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in tournaments under national flags. Later, the Irish Boxing Federation made the same decision. The UK Boxing Federation has announced a boycott of the women’s World Championship, a decision on the men’s will be made later.
Later, the IBA offered financial support and the opportunity to directly register for tournaments to athletes from countries that had declared a boycott of the World Championships due to the participation of Russians and Belarusians.
The IBA, headed by the Russian Umar Kremlev, in October 2022, despite the current recommendations of the IOC, allowed Russians and Belarusians to compete under the flags of their countries.
The men’s world championship will be held in Tashkent from 1 to 14 May, the women’s – in Delhi from 15 to 31 March.
