Politicians from the voted-out national-conservative ruling party PiS also protested yesterday. PiS President Andrzej Duda called the action “completely unlawful” and a violation of the constitution.
The day before, Culture Minister Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz fired the entire leadership of the public broadcaster in one fell swoop. This affected the CEOs and supervisory boards of the TVP television station, Polish radio and the PAP news agency. The Tusk government accuses the media of spreading party propaganda over the past eight years under the PiS government. International organizations had also criticized the one-sided reporting by the public media in Poland.
Dispute over national bank management
President Duda and the new government are also arguing regarding the work of central bank chief Adam Glapinski. Duda demonstratively supported Glapinski on Thursday. The government, on the other hand, accuses the financial manager of undermining the central bank’s independence, shaping monetary policy to benefit the long-standing PiS government and possibly violating constitutional rules.
That’s why the new three-party coalition is considering bringing Glapinski to court. The 73-year-old has been governor of Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP) since mid-2016 and rejects the allegations.
