Pokémon Go developers lay off almost a hundred workers and cancel several projects

Niantic, the developers of the hit Pokémon Go and other games that use augmented reality, they have canceled several projects, while laying off more than 80 employees.

According to a report published by Bloomberg, the company canceled four games, while CEO John Hanke noted that the company is “facing a time of economic turbulence”.

“Niantic needs to further streamline its operations in order to better position the company to weather any economic storm that may come,” he added.

As for the projects, canceled, according to what has been known, these would be Transformers: Heavy Metal, Hamlet, which is a collaboration with Punchdrunk Theater Company, Blue Sky and Snowball, in the case of the latter, it is not known if they were code or definitive names.

It should be remembered that along with Pokémon Go, Niantic has released games like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Pikmin, which have failed to replicate the success achieved by Pokémon.

Through a statement sent to Kotaku, from Niantic they added that “we have recently decided to stop the production of some projects and reduce our staff by approximately eight percent to focus on our key priorities. We are grateful for the contributions of those leaving Niantic, and are supporting them through this difficult transition.”.
