Poet Algimantas Mikuta died Culture

Born in Mažeikiai in 1943, A. Mikuta started publishing poems in 1958 and has published 23 collections of poetry. He made his debut in 1962 with the poetry collection “Flowers in a drawing board”, and the last book of the poet is the poetry collection “Birds fly in the lowlands” published in 2023.

“Algimantas Mikuta is one of the most famous poets of Lithuania, who not only created a distinctive, original style, but also educated and encouraged many poets who are now well-known,” says the Writers’ Union.

According to her, the poetic school of Kaunas is associated with the name of A. Mikutas, in his work there is a clear philosophical, paradoxical thinking, images typical of ballads and fables, a bright expressive dynamic style based on a specific detail, unexpected contrasts, irony and grotesque.

“A. Mikuta is one of the few creators who has remained faithful to the “traditional” verse form, rhyme and rhythm,” says the Writers’ Union

Many songs have been written based on A. Mikuta’s poetry, he worked in the culture and art magazine “Nemunas”, and was its chief editor in 1991-2004.

He translated several works of Russian classics, including Mikhail Bulgakov’s Moliere, The Master and Margarita, Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago.

In 1979, A. Mikuta became the laureate of “Poetry Spring”, his work was awarded various literary prizes, in 2011 the poet won the Lithuanian government’s culture and art prize, as well as the Lithuanian Writers’ Union and Kaunas city culture prizes.

In 2003, he was awarded the medal of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania, in 2013, the second degree Santaka badge of honor of the city of Kaunas.
