POEDIN: No panic, no complacency about invasive strep and monkeypox

“There is no need for complacency or panic. The operational readiness of the National Health Service is essential”, POEDIN points out, referring to the new risks that are emerging for public health in Greece.

The 12 deaths and 48 cases of invasive streptococcus in Greece since the beginning of the year, but also the global concern about the rapid spread of a new strain of the monkey pox disease (mpox) proves, according to hospital workers, that the National Health System to be strengthened to withstand upcoming threats.

“Some fear that monkeypox will evolve like covid-19. It is certainly necessary to pay attention to the high-risk groups and observe the protection measures, but not to compare illegal things”, the announcement states.

He continues: “For the monkeypox virus there are vaccines available that high-risk groups can get even in the first few days after exposure to the virus. Something that was not happening with covid-19. Transmission is more difficult than covid-19. On the other hand, it is a known virus that has been studied by the WHO, the scientific community in contrast to covid-19 when it first appeared”.

Regarding the invasive streptococcus, the announcement emphasizes: “The cases in Ilia cause justified concern and concern. But we know the seriousness of this disease since last winter when we lost children within a few hours from invasive streptococcus, even though they were admitted to the ICU. We have pointed out many times that special attention is needed.”

Regarding the observance of preventive measures: “A quick visit to a doctor, no telephone medical diagnoses, immediate Strep Test on patients which is very easy. Quick treatment saves patients. Every day, with new risks to public health, the need to strengthen the NHS emerges. covid-19 has come and gone and new threats to public health are constantly emerging.

This makes necessary the operational readiness of the NHS, which is currently in an operational deadlock due to serious staff shortages.

We have few recruitments that do not cover the wave of mass resignations due to unfavorable working conditions, low wages, lack of motivation, not joining the Heavy and Unhealthy Occupations (BAE), the job insecurity caused by the non-permanence of contract workers.

So no panic with monkey pox and invasive strep, but no complacency either. Let’s build the NHS”
