Pochettino talks about Paris’ failure to win the Champions League after leaving PSG
Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino spoke for the first time after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, where the former Tottenham coach failed to lead the team to the Champions League, during a season and a half at the helm of the technical leadership in the French capital.
Pochettino described not obtaining the Champions League title as a complete failure, and those who cannot achieve the club’s dream will be expelled from the technical leadership, as happened with him.
Pochettino left Paris after the consensual termination of his contract with the club, to be replaced by Christophe Galtier, the former Nice coach.
Pochettino: Not winning the Champions League is a failure at PSG
“It is clear that the Paris Saint-Germain project includes winning the Champions League, and whoever does not win the Champions League can always be considered a failure,” the Argentine said in statements highlighted by the Spanish newspaper “Marca”.
He added, “This is a failure of fifty years, and not only last season.”
He continued: “We won the tenth title this year, which is historically the equivalent of Saint-Etienne, the two teams that have won the most titles in the French League.”
“I think our achievement has been underestimated a lot, not appreciated but of course when you win it’s an obligation and if you don’t it looks like a complete disaster.”
Mbappe’s contract renewal and work with Neymar and Messi
The former Paris coach spoke about Mbappe’s renewal, saying: “I don’t think it was Kylian who designed the idea of the new project, I see it as the policy of the president and the owner who think that the most appropriate was a new project in the club.”
Pochettino also positively highlighted working with players such as Messi, Neymar and Mbappe among other stars at Parc des Princes as he said: “Messi is the best in the world”.
He added, “It is clear that Mbappe is a candidate to be able to get this crown, and there is Neymar who is also one of the best players in the world for me.”
He continued talking about the strength of the team’s dressing room with all these famous names, saying: “It was one of the most positive things, as I was able to meet them and compete under these conditions.”
The Argentine coach revealed that he is analyzing the previous period with Paris Saint-Germain, saying: “I am calm now and I am analyzing my previous period with Paris. I do not rule out a quick return to training, but all projects are currently closed.”
“It is possible that I will be the coach of the Argentina national team,” he concluded.
