NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that the world’s most populous country will seek to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai on Saturday, Modi said hosting the event represents “an ancient dream” of India.

“Indians not only love sports, they live them,” Modi mentioned. “India will spare no effort in preparing for the successful organization of the 2036 Olympic Games. It is the dream of 1.4 billion Indians. We want to fulfill this dream with your support. “I am sure India will receive continued support from the IOC.”

Modi did not specify which city or region would host the Games. But Ahmedabad would be a candidate, since it has the largest stadium in the world, with a capacity of 132,000 spectators and named following the prime minister.

Previously, Indonesia and Mexico have expressed official interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. Last month, Polish President Andrzej Duda told the IOC that he wants to hold the Games.

The IOC has not set a deadline for granting the venue. The 2036 Games are the next ones for which bidding is open among the candidates to organize them.

Paris will host the Olympics in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032.

Modi has also told the IOC that India would consider hosting the Youth Olympic Games in 2029.

Sport is not just regarding winning medals, but hearts,” he commented.
